4 Quotes I Keep Reminding Myself In 2018

January is the time for setting new goals and challenges for the rest of the year. It is important to get into a good mindset to start the year off right. Mindset is one of the best ways to put yourself on the right course, focus on what is important to you and disregard the things that do not matter. Listed below are 6 quotes I came across in 2017. They left a profound impact on me and changed my way of thinking. I fully intend on using these quotes to guide me in 2018. I hope they leave an impact on you and if not then at least make you think.

1. “It’s not about making the right choice. It’s about making a choice and making it right.” – J.R. Rim

I put this quote first because 2017 was dominated by me obsessing over making the right choices. I was convinced every decision had to be analyzed and weighed for pros vs cons. Doing this drove me crazy. I would waste hours or days trying to make the right decision. I soon realized there is no such thing as a “right” decision. Looking back to the choices I made after long analysis, they were really no different than the alternative. The outcome was not a result of the initial choice, but rather the effort or work I put into it.

This quote has put my mind in the right state to make decisions moving forward. It prevents me from being jaded or biased going into any new opportunity. In 2018 I will enter each new opportunity from the perspective of “What can I learn or exploit for gain?” or “How can I make I make the most of this situation” rather than “Did I make the right choice?”. This has taught me to focus and approach each situation like a race or hunt to find the areas where I can learn from.

2. “What if after you die, God asks you: ‘So, how was heaven?'” – Vishal Lahsiv

When I heard this quote it really stunned me. It made me completely question the way I was spending my time. In 2017 I wasted a lot of time just waiting for something. I lost hours of a day trying to kill time because I had something important in the afternoon or evening. While I traveled on a plane I would waste time watching pointless movies rather than do something productive. We all wait and chase after meaningful things but this quote made me realize the way we spend our time during the wait and chase is equally as meaningful.

In 2018 I intend on making the most of each minute of the day. I will make to-do lists at the start of every day so I can utilize every moment of my time towards learning something new, finishing an errand or improving my life. I want each day to be fulfilled and meaningful. I also intend on living in the moment and not living for the next big moment.

3. “Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.” – Jerzy Gregorek.

I characterize myself as lazy. I often take the easy way out or the path of least resistance. In 2017 this behavior resulted in many missed opportunities, wasted time or regrets. There are many situations where I chose the easy way and it resulted in delivering less than optimal results. In many of cases, I had to put in twice the amount of work to correct the mistakes made by choosing the easy way.

This quote has reprogrammed my thinking towards always taking the hard path. Rather than even considering a lazy approach or a quick fix, I now think “What do I need to do in this situation which will set me up for success”. I may not like it and I may initially hate it but by keeping the promise of an easy outcome in my mind, it helps me continue down the path. In 2018 I will still be the same person that is lazy and wants things easy, but the difference is, I will not do the hard work so I can enjoy the laziness and easy things later.

4. “You are the average of the five people you surround yourself with” – Jim Rohn

In 2017 I realized I had spent hours with friends and people where nothing was gained. I walked away not learning anything new, not being motivated and not being challenged to improve my life. When I added all of these hours up they amounted to days. Days I had lost not gaining anything. I have realized how valuable time is and it is just not worth wasting away.

This quote has made me reflect on my inner circle of friends, family, and acquaintances I spend time with. I have realized I want to be challenged, pushed, taught or motivated after each interaction. I do not want to waste time talking about movies, games, the weather, and the past if there is nothing to be learned from it. In 2018 I will eliminate or reduce the amount of time I spend with people who do not add value to my life. I am also focused on seeking out individuals who I can learn from.
